DiceCollector.com: A REALIZATION WHILD CLEANING A DIE
A REALIZATION WHILE CLEANING A DIE

I recently received what appears to be a 2 inch Ivory
CRISLOID d6

The die was a little bit dirty and had an area of discoloration on the 3 side

I first tried to remove it with water and was unsuccessful

Next I tried skin oil (probably the best cleaner) .. No luck

Next I tried ethyl alcohol (Everclear) which did TOO good a job (see 2nd photo below)
so dont use alcohol or worse ... unless you must

Finally I cleaned the entire die with LA's Totally Awesome (LA TA)

Over the years I had received dice that were boxed and I had always assumed
that if there was one ... two ... three or more sides that were ligher than the others
that the dice had been bleached by the light (the open side)
and that the original color of the dice were the darker color

I didnt consider why 2 or 3 sides would lighter than the other sides

I must have assumed that someone was changing the side that faced the light

I now think I have discovered the real reason why ...

I now believe that the darker color is caused by chemicals leaking from the
cardboard box in which the dice were stored and that the ligher side or side
is due to the dice not being in contact with the cardboard

This is why comic book backing boards are low acid ... so that they do not change the color of the comic

Yea ... it seems obvious now ... and it took me 42 years to come to this conclusion :)

Dice in cardboard boxes are usually in quantity of 2 ... 5 or 12

So depending on where the die is in the box it can have ...
as few as 3 or as many as 5 sides touching the cardboard

Here is the process I used to clean the die

Here is the die before cleaning

Sorry that I did not photgraph the 3 side
Here is the die after a first treatment with
LA Totally Awesome

Notice the slightly lighter section above and to the left of the bottom pip on the 3 side? ... That is the area I overcleaned with Everclear

You can also see the spillover of the LA TA
on the 1 and 5 sides

I started cleaning with a cotton bud (Q-Tip for us Americans) ... then moved to using a soft tooth brush
I saved the 1 side for last
so that the contrast can be seen
After I finished cleaning all faces I rinsed the die in
water and then applied a coat of skin oil to bring back the shine
